Tribal Rings and Tribal Jewellery


Tribal jewellery and tribal rings from Africa. The tribal pendants have ancient meanings and modern meanings. As time has passed certain meanings have been lost, or have adapted to suit the times. The tokoloshe for instance, is an ancient belief but in modern times people raise their beds on bricks to protect against the tokoloshe – beds were not around in African culture 200 years ago.

African Tribal masks have also morphed and of course, like any fashion item African tribal jewellery has followed trends throughout history. Jewelry from tribal tattoos has also found a place. Nowadays tribal tattoos are popular amongst sportsmen. Tribal masks and icons like the nyaminyami have become a sought after item by travellers and tourists visiting Africa.

 

Tribal rings are not comman and tribal jewellery is now often only found in tourist shops and is often cheap and nasty. Tribal jewelry, as we see it today, is often a poor copy of the original pieces.

African tribal masks, in their original context, were used for many cerimonial purposes and to honour and appease the ancestors. Ancient knowledge and the ancient meanings have in many cases been lost to modern African, but if one travels to the wild places in Africa it is common to see these ancient rituals still in practise. Accross the world tribal tattoos have played a part in human culture… and today they are still doing so – even if it is a statement of fashion and wealth.
