Nyaminyami is a great example of tribal jewellery. It has the credentials of being an old African myth that has been passed down and it has found a place in the hearts of many traveller to Africa. The nyaminyami was a snake creature who cut from his body when the people in his area were hungry.
The myth of Nyaminyami is a well loved African story and although nyaminyami has not been seen by the locals since the building of the Kariba dam in Zimbabwe, he has found new popularity as a symbol from Zimbabwe – A nyaminyami pendant is often given to brave tourists who do a bungee jump off of the Vic Falls bridge. Nyaminyami is carved in wood by the local craftsmen, and is made in silver by the jewellers. Available in 3 sizes in sterling silver, while it cannot be called African Art it was carved by an Artist based in South Africa. The fine details show beautifully in the oxidised sterling silver.
