Nyaminyami is a great example of tribal jewellery. It has the credentials of being an old African myth that has been passed down and it has found a place in the hearts of many traveller to Africa. The nyaminyami was a snake creature who cut from his body when the people in his area were hungry.

The myth of Nyaminyami is a well loved African story and although nyaminyami has not been seen by the locals since the building of the Kariba dam in Zimbabwe, he has found new popularity as a symbol from Zimbabwe – A nyaminyami pendant is often given to brave tourists who do a bungee jump off of the Vic Falls bridge. Nyaminyami is carved in wood by the local craftsmen, and is made in silver by the jewellers. Available in 3 sizes in sterling silver, while it cannot be called African Art it was carved by an Artist based in South Africa. The fine details show beautifully in the oxidised sterling silver.

This beautiful mask of an African women’s face has been crafted in Sterling silver. African art is often not art in the sense that westerners understand it. Art in Africa, or art by Africans is approached from a different angle – certainly the older “art” as in African sculptures and African masks. Rather than just beauty, the African art was created for a reason, functional art – to honour the ancestors, or to protect the living. This Guru woman’s face is a fine example of the beauty that is seen in African woman, and of course art. Tribal art should be seen from an African’s perspective – tribal jewellery often filled the same functions as African Art.

Tribal jewellery and tribal rings from Africa. The tribal pendants have ancient meanings and modern meanings. As time has passed certain meanings have been lost, or have adapted to suit the times. The tokoloshe for instance, is an ancient belief but in modern times people raise their beds on bricks to protect against the tokoloshe – beds were not around in African culture 200 years ago.

beautiful tribal tattoo

African Tribal masks have also morphed and of course, like any fashion item African tribal jewellery has followed trends throughout history. Jewelry from tribal tattoos has also found a place. Nowadays tribal tattoos are popular amongst sportsmen. Tribal masks and icons like the nyaminyami have become a sought after item by travellers and tourists visiting Africa.

Tribal rings are not comman and tribal jewellery is now often only found in tourist shops and is often cheap and nasty. Tribal jewelry, as we see it today, is often a poor copy of the original pieces.

African tribal rings, and indeed, tribal rings from other cultures were often passed from genertaion to generation to sybbolise the passing on of the power of that family or tribe.

African tribal masks, in their original context, were used for many cerimonial purposes and to honour and appease the ancestors. Ancient knowledge and the ancient meanings have in many cases been lost to modern African, but if one travels to the wild places in Africa it is common to see these ancient rituals still in practise. Accross the world tribal tattoos have played a part in human culture… and today they are still doing so – even if it is a statement of fashion and wealth.
